Not only was Monday the day of the Great American Eclipse, but also it was Kirby’s birthday! (Or, more preciously, exactly four years since Kirby showed up on my doorstep in a FedEx box!) What an amazing coincidence! That calls for a special party, don’t you think?
This year, Kirby’s birthday party got a theme: Rainbows!
This year’s birthday party may gone a bit overboard…Scroll to the end for a special surprise!
How to Throw A Rainbow-Themed Birthday Party For A Tiny Tortoise
Step 1: A special birthday hat just for Kirby!
Kirby has gotten so big that he can now wear a party hat on his head! In fact, he is so big that I had to make his party hat several sizes bigger than initially expected!
Step 2: Meet a unicorn!
No rainbow-themed birthday party would be complete without a unicorn!
Turns out drink holders are the perfect size for Kirby!
The best part? Kirby’s unicorn was all of $0.99 on eBay, with free shipping!
It wouldn’t be a Kirby post without at least one gif!
As exciting as a unicorn is, no birthday party would be complete without…
Step 3: Cake!
More specifically, a rainbow cake!
Every layer is one of Kirby’s favorite foods: Red watermelon, orange carrots, yellow apple, green frilly kale, and purple radicchio—topped with four pretty origami stars, one for every one of Kirby’s four years!
One last photo before the guest of honor dug in…
And here comes the birthday boy!
Spoiler alert: He could not, although he certainly tried!
Kirby was so excited and overwhelmed that he went for whatever was immediately in front of his mouth and kept missing at first! In fact, he was so excited that he didn’t even notice the radicchio until much later!
Eventually, Kirby managed to pull apart his cake into more nom-able pieces and then the real nomming began!
Despite my best efforts, Kirby did not manage to keep his hat on. I eventually gave up on putting it back on his head.
Kirby did, however, eventually notice the radicchio in the last layer of his cake, and boy, did he get excited!
Step 4: Presents!
But wait! There was one last item on the agenda for Kirby’s birthday party! This one had to wait until the next day, after Kirby had emerged from his food coma: Birthday presents!
My present for Kirby was a new, bigger carrier! With all the growing Kirby has been doing, his trusty old carrier is almost too small for him!
If you’re wondering just how big Kirby is now…
Except I misjudged when it came to choosing Kirby’s present…Kirby’s new carrier is too big! The biggest problem? The new carrier is so big that Kirby can’t see out the windows at all! This will not do. Curious Kirby absolutely needs to see everything happening around him! (If he can’t see out, he goes berserk!)
So back to the store it is for me to find Kirby another, smaller new carrier…In the meantime, Kirby gets to play with the puppy and its grooming tools that came with this carrier.
In the meantime, Kirby got a much better and very exciting present all the way from Japan: Friends Tito, Nico, and Joa (@anne-fine.tumblr.com) sent Kirby the most amazing surprise birthday package!!
It is the most beautiful package I have ever seen, filled with so many wonderful goodies: An adorably tiny and festive birthday card; the cutest, happiest little tenpai turtle friends; and a beautiful omamori lucky charm made of kimono fabric!
No detail was overlooked: Even the box was decorated with happy turtles! Speaking of the box, Kirby got quite excited about the pink packing fluff…
Last but not least, a few BTS snapshots of setting up Kirby’s rainbow-themed birthday party:
Kirby’s party hat was a simple homemade paper hat. I found a party hat template from Google (I used this one) and scaled it down to fit Kirby’s head. In retrospect, I should have used a template without a cutout at the top, but Kirby’s hat is so small that it looks pointy anyways.
The cake toppers on Kirby’s cake were traditional origami stars that I stuck on toothpicks.
I ended up having to trim the toothpicks substantially because it was too difficult to pierce through the carrot layer without cake pieces flying in all directions!
I meant to take a few in-progress photos of the cake, but that turned out to be such a messy process of slicing and peeling that I just didn’t have enough hands to also take photos!
And now…for the grand finale…
Presenting…a video of Kirby’s birthday party!
Until next year for another birthday party!
